Advanced new 3D technology available at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center coordinates with 2D mammography and breast MRI to increase the rate of breast cancer detection and reduce the amount of unnecessary return visits for repeat breast screenings. According to a recent study by the Journal of the American Medical Association tomosynthesis - or 3D mammography - can also increase the detection of more invasive and deadly cancers. The study involved nearly half a million women, and determined that 3D mammography, combined with traditional 2D mammography, was associated with a 41 percent increase in the detection rate of invasive cancers and a 15 percent drop in additional screenings for false alarms.
Chesapeake Regional Physician Hospital Organization is a group of primary care physicians who have partnered with Chesapeake Regional Healthcare. Chesapeake Regional PHO allows physicians to have a strong voice in how they treat their patients. The PHO has taken on a Patient-Centered Medical Home approach to treating their patients. The patient-centered medical home is a way of organizing primary care that emphasizes care coordination and communication to transform primary care into what patients want it to be.

Radiosurgery procedures on the brain are performed using Gamma Knife®, considered one the most advanced non-invasive neurosurgical tools available. The Gamma Knife® allows a surgeon to perform brain surgery without a scalpel and without cutting the skull. Instead, the Gamma Knife® treatment uses 201 highly focused beams of Cobalt-60 radiation that intersect at a tumor site to produce biological effects on tissues inside the skull. Because of its exceptional precision, treatment is typically carried out in a single sitting and potential damage to healthy surrounding tissue is minimized. This Gamma Knife® radiosurgical treatment has an impressive scientific track record with thousands of peer-reviewed articles. No other non-invasive treatment method in this field has greater clinical acceptance in the world.
In addition to the Gamma Knife®, which is used to treat both malignant and non-malignant brain tumors and other brain diseases, Chesapeake Regional, Riverside and University of Virginia Radiosurgery Center also uses the Synergy S® system, which was developed for areas of the body as well as some tumors of the brain. The Synergy S® System combines a linear accelerator with a specialized, real-time imaging system that enables clinicians to more precisely target radiation to tumors or lesion sites, including the base of the skull, spine, neck, chest, lungs, pancreas, liver and adrenal gland.
Both of these technologies are rooted in precisely delivered beams of radiation rather than incisions. Procedures are nearly painless and patients recover much faster than with conventional surgery.

Surgical robotics is a technology designed to give surgeons more precision and control during complex, minimally invasive procedures. It is an alternative to open surgery and laparoscopic surgery and can result in quicker recoveries for patients.
The da Vinci Surgical System "robot" is a state-of-the art medical device that enables surgeons to guide miniature instruments and a tiny, high-definition camera to the surgery site. Seated at a console, the surgeon guides several robotic arms, which hold the surgical instruments. State-of-the-art robotic and computer technology transform the surgeon’s hand and arm movements into small, precise movements. The robotic “wrists” can rotate a full 360 degrees, giving the surgeon exceptional accuracy, flexibility and range of motion. The da Vinci System requires that every surgical maneuver be performed with direct input from your surgeon – the machine cannot move on its own.

Facing any kind of urologic surgery creates a great deal of anxiety for most men. Many men often worry that their body will not function normally after surgery. Traditional open urologic surgery – in which large incisions are made to access the pelvic organs – has been the standard approach when surgery is warranted. Yet common drawbacks of this procedure include significant post-surgical pain, a lengthy recovery and an unpredictable, potentially long-term impact on continence and sexual function.
da Vinci Surgery, a minimally invasive approach that utilizes the latest in surgical and robotics technologies, is ideal for delicate urologic surgery. This includes prostatectomy, in which the target site is not only tightly confined but also surrounded by nerves affecting urinary control and sexual function.
Traditional open gynecologic surgery, using a large incision for access to the uterus and surrounding anatomy, has for many years been the standard approach to many gynecologic procedures. Yet with open surgery can come significant pain, trauma, a long recovery process and threat to surrounding organs and nerves.
For complex hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures, robot-assisted surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System may be the most effective, least invasive treatment option. Through tiny, 1-2 cm incisions, surgeons using the da Vinci System can operate with greater precision and control, minimizing the pain and risk associated with large incisions while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.

When patients visit the Emergency Department at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, they are greeted in the waiting area by a full-time staff member charged with getting them registered and treated as quickly as possible while delivering superior medical care.
The registration process is just another initiative by Chesapeake Regional to further reduce patient wait times. We value your time and we have some of the shortest wait times in the area. We want patients seen as quickly as possible to receive the best medical care available.
In addition to this “greeter,” other processes are already in place to reduce wait times. An electronic information system and full bedside registration speeds patient access to treatment.
The Quick Care area has been expanded to care for patients with less serious complaints and a chest pain staging area has been opened. Having this designated area allows staff members to speed the evaluation of patients who arrive with chest pain symptoms.
When it comes to chest pain, it’s all about speed. Hospitals see a lot of patients with chest pain - in fact it is the most common reason they come to the ER. That’s why Chesapeake Regional Medical Center established a chest pain center within its Emergency Department to ensure that patients receive fast, accurate and state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment as soon as they arrive at its doors.
Our teletracking system electronically tracks patient and bed status. This system improves clinical communication and patient throughput. The system incorporates an IBEX screen, a large flat screen for patient status documentation, and “computers on wheels” (COWs) to make patient charting an electronic process.
Through a new partnership with Chesapeake ambulance services, EMS teams are able to perform EKGs in the field and send the information within seconds to the emergency department. This allows the cardiac team to be in place as soon as the patient arrives at the ER.
Once there, a highly skilled team with advanced knowledge in managing heart attacks provides rapid therapy to decide whether immediate medical treatment is warranted, further tests are needed or observation is necessary.
Chesapeake Regional Medical Center is among just a few hospitals in the region using hyperbaric, or oxygen-filled chambers, to heal challenging wounds and conditions.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves exposing the body to 100 percent oxygen at a pressure that is greater than what you normally experience. Wounds need oxygen to heal properly, and exposing a wound to 100 percent oxygen often speeds the healing process.

Doctors from Chesapeake Radiologists, Ltd. and Cardiovascular Associates, Ltd. at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center are among 32 centers participating in an FDA-approved clinical study to improve access to MRI diagnostics for cardiac rhythm patients
Innovative medical technology is helping to change medical care in the Hampton Roads community thanks to Chesapeake Regional Medical Center and the physicians from Cardiovascular Associates, Ltd. The hospital and specialty group are working together to contribute to a clinical study using the first implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) approved in the U.S. for use in an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanner. Already three patients who have the unique devices implanted have completed MRI scans.
Each year thousands of patients receive ICDs which protect them from fatal heart rhythms. Until now, patients with the implantable life-saving device were not permitted to receive an MRI scan due to the risk the scanner may interfere with the function of the ICD. This is a challenge for patients and physicians since an estimated 50 to 75 percent of patients with ICDs will need an MRI during their lifetime. Chesapeake Regional Medical Center is one of 32 leading U.S. investigational centers which are evaluating the safety and efficacy of BIOTRONIK’s Iforia ProMRI® systems with Setrox and Linoxsmart leads during an MRI scan. The study will recruit and evaluate 172 patients across the U.S. All ICD systems in the study are currently commercially available but await FDA approval specifically for use in the MRI environment. BIOTRONIK is sponsoring the clinical study.
“Any patient who is getting an ICD wants to know they are getting the best devices for their cardiac condition, but now we can begin to consider the other care that may be needed,” said Dr. John Griffin, who practices with Cardiovascular Associates and is the principal investigator on the study. “There are a variety of health conditions patients may have or may develop that an MRI is the diagnostic standard for imaging studies. This study, and the patients in this study, is expanding the way physicians can care for them throughout their lifetimes.”
“I was very excited to actively participate in this research opportunity. Many patients with pacemakers/ICDs who need an MRI must be turned away for their own safety. Developing MRI compatible cardiac devices is of utmost importance in order to provide the best care for our patients. Chesapeake Regional Medical Center now provides a Drug Coated Balloon PTA Catheter (DCB) for percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), a minimally invasive procedure used to open blocked arteries in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). CRMC is the only hospital in Hampton Roads to use this device, performing the first successful case Nov. 4.
“The Lutonix® 035 Drug Coated Balloon helps deliver medicine directly to the artery, which significantly lowers the risk of the blockage returning, without closing the door to other treatment options down the road,” said Christopher L. Stout, M.D., a vascular surgeon who is on staff at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center and performed the first procedure in Hampton Roads. “This piece of technology is just one of the ways we are bringing innovative care to our patients at Chesapeake Regional.”
Way-finding assistance is found throughout the memory unit at Cedar Manor. To ensure resident safety, the EV2 real-time resident monitoring system has been installed. This state-of-the-art system personalizes patient tracking and location. It also provides each resident continuous calling capability from anywhere in the facility. Since residents wear the EV2 system, it's always available. The wall mounted help call buttons are location-specific.
